Putting Roadside on the Map: How Agero and Google Are Protecting Drivers

If you’ve ever driven past a tow truck working a breakdown on the highway, you know how little space there can be between a Service Provider and passing traffic. Now imagine getting a heads-up a mile before you reached that scene.

That’s exactly what we’ve built with Google.

Each year, our platform manages 14 million roadside events across the country, and every one of them generates real-time data: where the vehicle is, what service is underway, and whether the job is still active. We’ve now connected that data directly to Google Maps and Waze. When a driver approaches an active Agero job, the app alerts them ahead of time, giving them a chance to slow down and move over before they reach the Provider at work.

Why This Matters to Our Providers

Towing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. On average, a tow operator is killed on the job every week. Many are struck by distracted or inattentive drivers while working just feet from high-speed traffic. Every state has a Move Over law, but drivers can only move over for a scene they know is there.

We advocate for our Service Providers every day, and their safety is at the top of that list. With our service providers covering 100% of zip codes across the nation, the reach of these notifications is massive— and vitally important. These alerts give drivers everywhere more warning before they reach a Provider at work, while also protecting the stranded customers waiting for help.

Putting Our Data to Work

Our team built the integration that sends alerts to Google Maps and Waze as they happen and clears them the moment service is complete. We’ve also taken it a step further. When a request comes from a highway, we immediately create the safety alert before the customer has even finished asking for service. Drivers get warned about the stranded vehicle long before a Provider arrives, so the customer is protected from the start.

For years, this data has lived inside our dispatch platform, helping us get the right truck to the right place at the right time. That’s a big reason we’ve been able to drive industry leading NPS results of over 85. The same data that gets a truck to a stranded customer now protects everyone at the scene. Providers get more room to work. Customers are safer while they wait. Motorists get a warning in time to move over.

Moving the Industry Forward

To us, this is what meaningful technology looks like: real-time data put to work inside the tools millions of people already use every day.

Getting a truck to the scene is only part of the job. The Providers who show up for stranded drivers deserve to get home safely too. That’s why we build technology for the people working the roadside event, not just the customers they serve. Our work with Google extends that commitment to every driver on the road, so the people passing by know our Providers are there.

We believe the whole industry should treat Provider safety this way, and we’re proud to lead by example.
